Sens Mechanical specializes in repairing and installing heat pump systems to match your individual situation. Installing the wrong heat pump system can lead to serious problems later on such as poor air quality, discomfort and higher energy bills. A heat pump must also be tuned up. A heat pump is a machine that moves heat from one location (the 'source') to another location (the 'heat sink') using mechanical work. Most heat pump technology moves heat from a low temperature heat source to a higher temperature heat sink (air condition). Heat pumps can also operate in reverse, producing heat (heater). Heat pumps can be thought of as a heat engine which is operating in reverse. In heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) applications, a heat pump normally refers to a vapor-compression refrigeration device that includes a reversing valve and optimized heat exchangers so that the direction of heat flow may be reversed depending on the season and need. Most commonly, heat pumps draw heat from the air or from the ground (geothermal). Heat pumps must be kept in proper repair and must be serviced regularly to maintain ultimate efficiency. Sens Mechanical can repair, install and maintain your heat pump today.

There are two main types of heat pumps that Sens Mechanical installs. Air-source and Geothermal. Air source heat pumps are relatively easy (and inexpensive) to install and have therefore historically been the most widely used heat pump type. The higher temperature differential during periods of extreme cold or heat leads to a lower efficiency although often costs less to operate than traditional oil or electric heating.

Geothermal heat pumps typically have higher efficiencies than air-source heat pumps. This is because they draw heat from the ground or groundwater which is at a relatively constant temperature all year round (approx. 55 degrees Fahrenheit) below a depth of about eight feet. This means that the temperature differential is lower, leading to higher efficiency. Ground-source heat pumps typically have coefficient of performance of 3.5-4.0 with little seasonal variation. The tradeoff for this improved performance is that a ground-source heat pump is initially more expensive to install due to the need for the digging of wells or trenches in which to place the pipes that carry the heat exchange fluid. When compared versus each other, groundwater heat pumps are generally more efficient than heat pumps using heat from the soil.

Sens Mechanical would be more than happy to sit down and explain which system is right for your situation or how your heat pump system can be tuned for optimal performance. Call us today at 410-629-0777 for a free consultation.

Geothermal Heat Pumps Explained by Sens Mechanical

  1. Compressor: This increases the pressure of the refrigerant so that it will accept the maximum amount of heat from the air.
  2. Condenser: Coils that move heat to or from the outside air.
  3. Evaporator: Coils that move heat to or from the air inside the home.
  4. Air handler: Fan that blows the air into the ducts of the home. Components 1, 2, 3 and 4 are found in all standard air conditioners.
  5. Reversing valve: Changes the heat pump from air conditioning to heating, and vice versa. This is not part of the thermostat.
